Who We Are

The Pamoja Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. and in Kenya. It was founded in 2015 with the goal of inspiring and empowering vulnerable children and youth in low income communities in Kenya through literacy and education opportunities. Our mission is to promote and provide free and affordable access to books, information, and critical programs necessary for success. We desire to be an avenue for nurturing dreams and a catalyst for developing bright minds.

Terry, our founder was born and raised in Meru, a place she still calls home today and one that is dear to her heart. Having grown up in Meru she knows the only path to a successful future to the millions of children living there is literacy and education. Making information and knowledge readily accessible is the only way to achieve this. Her dream is, through reading, to inspire every child to learn the world around them, the limitless opportunities it has to offer, and to start dreaming big early.

Together, as the word Pamoja means in Swahili, we can help shape the future of the world, one child, one community at a time.

Our Mission

To inspire and empower vulnerable children and youth in low income communities in Kenya through literacy and education opportunities.

Our Vision

To see a world where access to knowledge and information is not limited to only a few select, but available to all.

Terry Kiruja

Terry Kiruja

Founder

Terry is an associate at Booz Allen Hamilton with 10 years of Financial and Project Management experience. Her other passion lies in promoting literacy and education.

“Whenever I visit my home village in Kenya, all the children I meet have these contagious smiles and joy and there is nothing I love more than spending hours talking with them. They remind me of myself when I was young. They are oblivious of the poverty that surrounds them and all the while I’m thinking they desperately need a way out of the poverty cycle that awaits them. I believe, from first-hand experience, education is the only way out. This keeps me awake at night and fuels my passion for bringing opportunities to these underprivileged children and presenting them with the possibility of an alternative life outcome.”
